Emerge was hired to assist FDEM, FDACS and FWC to recover unregistered vessels used to migrate to the US. These hand made boats ended up on reefs, beaches, sea grass beds and mangrove habitat areas from Miami to the Dry Tortugas. Most of these unregistered vessels contain fuel, oil and other contaminates. These recoveries are complex because of the sensitive environments we are working in. As of September 1, 2023 we have carefully recovered 376 vessels which have been removed, decontaminated, and disposed of. Two of crews, one 30' crane barge and our 100' jet barge was deployed to the keys in January 2023. Emerge will remain in the Florida Keys to intercept incoming vessels and maintain cleanup efforts ongoing.
Take a look below to see some of the various vessels built to make the journey to the US. These hand made boats contained contaminates and landed in mostly environmentally sensitive areas. Materials used to build these boats range from foam, roof metal, oil drums welded together and some wooden plank on frame. These boats are powered by diesel engines from cars and tractors.
Emerge Marine has established itself as a leader in derelict vessel recovery and hurricane recovery efforts, having successfully removed nearly 3,000 vessels for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) statewide. These efforts are crucial in preventing environmental harm caused by abandoned boats, which can leak harmful chemicals, fuel, and other pollutants into the water, endangering marine life and ecosystems. Emerge Marine’s expertise in handling and removing these vessels ensures that waterways remain safe, clean, and accessible for both the public and wildlife. Their commitment to these recovery projects reflects a dedication to maintaining the health of Florida’s coastal environments.
In addition to vessel removal, Emerge Marine is at the forefront of innovation in environmental sustainability. As the first company to pilot a project for FDEM focused on recycling derelict vessels, Emerge Marine is transforming abandoned boats and debris into reusable building materials, which helps reduce waste and supports sustainable construction practices. This pioneering approach not only addresses the environmental impacts of derelict vessels but also provides valuable resources for local communities. Emerge Marine excels in working within sensitive marine environments, ensuring that all recovery and recycling activities are conducted with the utmost care to preserve and protect delicate ecosystems while aiding in the long-term resilience of coastal regions affected by hurricanes and other natural disasters.
